About
Compassion by Design

Compassion by Design was born out of deep church planting and community outreach experience.

We understand first-hand the process and the challenges of growing authentic and relevant churches that reach beyond four walls to enfold communities. How churches and multi-site congregations start, is how they grow. By launching with an external focus, and engaging team members in the process of listening, impact is created on both your launch team and your community.

Compassion by Design helps position the new church with a demonstrated commitment to communities. While this is something that many churches claim as a focus, it is difficult to convince community members and leaders, that the goal of serving others is real. The Community Needs Assessment takes a page from the playbook of professional community service and applies it to the unique setting of church planting and multi-church growth.

Compassion by Design is a project of Capacity to Serve, Inc. a nonprofit based in Virginia that focuses on building capacity with organizations that are changing our world.

Mission: To develop healthy communities based upon a holistic approach to human development that includes social, physical, educational and spiritual health. We invest in the development of communities that improve their health in these ways:

Leadership

Compassion by Design is lead by David Mills, a veteran church planter and community service leader. His experience in personally planting multiple churches in diverse settings on both coasts, along with development of community service programs with national reach gives him a unique perspective. Bringing these two worlds together, allows new churches to position themselves with solid commitments and credibility in communities - a passion of David's.  He is the author of four workbooks on community needs assessment.

David is married to Dawn, lives in Fredericksburg, VA and is the father of 4 children. They enjoy the mid-atlantic and love activities with their 12 grandchildren.
