I spent a few minutes today on the phone with a planter who has been on the ground for about 4 months. I will protect his name to avoid any confusion in his town, but here is what he feels about the impact of needs assessment:
Needs assessment has been a great vehicle for me to hang out with people and learn things that I could not have discovered any other way; The needs assessment is allowing us to find ourselves in places where we have no business being at this stage.
I also pastor a church plant that has only been in our community 4 months. We believe in the ‘Needs Assessment’ as the true method to understand our community. We have partnered with our community for events like 5K Run/Walks for Cancer, and community park projects, etc. because they draw pretty large crowds which also allows us to survey the crowd and people of influence. Through our involvement, we have been able to build relationships and begin to be recognized in our community as a church that cares. Our community also has a lot of strengths and the surveys not only reveal needs but community strengths which we can partner with.
