The Value of a Coach

I am participating in CoachNet training this weekend with Ted Cornelius, being hosted at Harpeth Community Church in Nasheville.  Along with several others who want to become more effective at helping others reach their ministry and service goals, I am learning about how to listen and come along side more effectively.  Bobbie Harrington emphasizes the idea of “drawing another person out” to bring clarity and to make progress.

On a personal level, having someone pay attention to my growth on a personal or professional level is both encouraging and valuable– I get help wrestling with the issues that I am working to resolve.  The coach draws out what I already knew, or needed to say, helping me to examine the real issues.

Coaching is being used for ministry leaders, church planters and a variety of other folks who want to make progress in achieving life and ministry goals.

The hard shift for me is to talk less and listen more– real ownership on an issue comes when the person being coached sets their own goals: goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound.

The skills and practice of coaching hold real promise for improving leadership, raising up new leaders, developing disciples.  Since coaching is action oriented (future leaning and progress focused), it can help us in the development of missional disciples and ministries.  You can learn more about coaching at www.coachnet.org.
